Land Acknowledgement

Ancram Center for the Arts is located on the unceded homelands of the Mo-He-Con-Nuck, the Peoples of the Water That Are Never Still, now known as the Hudson River. The Roeliff Jansen Kill, which Ancram Center overlooks, is a tributary to the Hudson and was originally called the Sankhenak (flintstone creek) or Sonkippog (cooling water). We are privileged to work and reside in this region, respect the legacy of those who precede us here, and honor their descendants of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community.

The Ancram Opera House Building

The Ancram Opera House was erected in 1927 as Ancram Grange #955, a chapter of the National Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry, to address the social, educational and economic concerns of the region’s farmers.  In 1972, the building was repurposed and renamed the Ancram Opera House as an arts venue focusing on light operatic fare.  Over the years, a variety of performances, film showings, vaudeville acts, lectures and social gatherings have taken place here.  In 2016, under new leadership, Ancram Center rededicated itself to aspects of its origins: to produce and present inventive contemporary theatrical performances to be shared by a rural community.
